Project title: Rock Matters: A Geological Basis for Understanding the Rock at the Ness of Brodgar
With a background in the earth sciences, specifically geology, retirement has combined interests in geology and archaeology into this research project:
By adding a geological perspective into an archaeological setting, this research will establish a systematic framework for the recovery and identification of non-structural, non-tool rocks, specifically those rocks from the Ness of Brodgar. The integration of macro petrological analysis with more conventional archaeological analysis will provide a geological basis for understanding the patterns of rock choice and selection. This research will synthesize the archival and current data on the petrologic resources available within Orkney, specifically the West Mainland, permitting potential source outcrops of the non-structural, non-tool rock to be identified.
