Biography

Godwin Ovenseri-Ogbomo is an academic with a background in optometry and vision science. He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in Optometry at the Department of Optometry. His academic journey includes a Doctor of Philosophy focused on the amplitude of accommodation in a Nigerian population aged 6 - 60 years from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa; a Master of Public Health and Doctor of Optometry from the University of Benin, Nigeria. Godwin is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, the Nigerian Postgraduate College of Optometry and the Higher Education Academy. He was named as the 2024 recipient of the American Academy of Optometry-Essilor Award for Outstanding International Contributions to Optometry recognising his extraordinary contributions to international optometry through optometric education.

Since 2004, he has been a university academic, teaching undergraduate optometry students in Ghana, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia and has served as examiner for PhD and Master’s thesis at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, University of Johannesburg, South Africa and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya. He has also served as a WHO expert on low vision in Africa.

Research

Godwin has made significant contributions to the field of optometry and vision science and public health. His research activities encompass a wide range of topics, addressing both clinical and public health challenges. This includes refractive errors and low vision, diabetes and eye health as well as COVID-19 collaborating with researchers to provide an African perspective the COVID-19 pandemic.
