Biography
Madara Zvirgzdina joined UHI as a lecturer in optometry in 2020. Prior to that Madara undertook a role of clinical research optometrist at Aston University and developed research projects, in particular spectacle wearer trials in children and adults for ZEISS Vision Care, where she also completed her PhD in 2019 in myopia management, corneal biomechanics and orthokeratology and worked as a clinical demonstrator. Madara qualified as an optometrist in 2014 and is currently undertaking the training to gain independent prescribing qualification. Madara is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research
Research interests involve myopia, myopia management, orthokeratology and corneal biomechanics.
Teaching
Madara is involved in teaching across all year groups of undergraduate optometry students but mostly teaches Year 2 and Year 4 students on modules Clinical Case Studies 1 & 2 & Advanced Optometric Studies 2 respectively, which comprise of elements of problem-based and team-based learning. Madara also supervises literature reviews and final year dissertations.
