Biography
Michelle Beattie is a nurse academic with expertise in healthcare quality improvement (QI). Michelle is a qualified nurse with 20 years clinical and managerial experience predominantly in acute care. Her PhD was measuring the patient experienced of hospital quality care and her programme of work focuses on improving the experience and outcomes of patients and practitioners by improving processes and systems.
Michelle is PGR Coordinator which involves organising our research postgraduate students in the Centre for Rural Health Sciences and ensuring programmes are compliant with University Regulations and Codes of Practice to drive excellent student experience. Michelle has a diverse role in the Centre, including supporting and teaching undergraduates, module leadership for postgraduate, PhD supervision and interest and expertise in research ethics.
Research
Michelle’s main areas of research expertise are patient and staff experience and implementation science. She has experience in instrument development, systematic reviews and qualitative approaches. Recent work has focused on research in care homes and realist evaluation.

Teaching
Michelle contributes and leads teaching across the undergraduate and postgraduate portfolio. Including:
- Supervising PhD students
- Module Leader for Improvement Science: Enhancing Quality in Health and Social Care, Quality Improvement MSc Dissertation, Transition to Professional Practice.
- Teaching Bachelor of Science in Nursing – including a range of clinical skills, seminars and lectures across the undergraduate nursing programme.
Publications
