Biography
Nicola Carey is Professor of Health Services Research and academic lead for the Scottish Rural Health Hub. Nicola is a qualified nurse with over 20 years teaching and curriculum development experience in clinical and academic settings to undergraduate and postgraduate students at several UK institutes and in the US. Her research programme is designed to support the development and evaluation of innovation in clinical practice related to long-term conditions and she provides leadership in the field nationally and internationally.
Nicola is Chair for the Association of Prescribers and committee member for the International Collaboration for Community Health Nursing Research. Previously Nicola was a member of the HTA pharmaceutical panel and the NIHR grant awarding body Research for Patients Benefit (RfPB). Prior to joining UHI Nicola was Lead for the Long-Term Conditions and Ageing Cluster, and Reader in Long Term Conditions at the University of Surrey.
Research
Nicola’s main areas of research expertise are exploration of long-term conditions and workforce development using mixed methods research and case study design, most notably the evaluation and implementation of non-doctor prescribing by nurses and allied health professionals in the UK in both primary and secondary care. She has extensive experience in all aspects of the research process including study design, data collection, data analysis and report writing. Nicola has experience and skills in the use of a variety of research methodologies, including development of technology, systematic reviews and the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data.
